The Raise the Roof! Festival Weekend at Nottingham’s major international art gallery and performance space explores the connections between live contemporary and electronic music and will showcase some of the most exciting musicians working today.
“The aim is to bring together some of the best Electronic, Soul, Jazz, World music, without boundaries, in one weekend, in a great contemporary performance space.”

Joff has been DJing since he was 19 and is a passionate, discerning selector and researcher of new and old music. He’s played alongside the likes of DJ Vadim, DJ Food, and Andy Smith. He’ll be mixing up the musical styles as usuals with a laid back set that links electronia, rare spiritual & afro cuban jazz and post dubstep.

Bones is a DJ, producer and percussionist. His DJ sets can be a mix of new jazz, spiritual jazz, new school breaks and dubstep. He’s played alongside some of the most well known DJs around such as Gilles Peterson.
ELSEWHERE DJS
The Elsewhere DJs Jamie Salmon (Vastik Root / The Curious Machine) and Noel Murphy (Wauvenfold / VDU) return from their geographically enforced hiatus to bring the spirit of their old radio show into the present day, continuing their work as proponents of playful, cutting-edge electronic music, amplifying tracks old and new from all corners of the computational spectrum.

Shrunken Heads is a melting pot of graffiti writers, Illustrators and artists. For this event Shrunken Heads will be bringing their ready made drawing wall to host local talent and to give the public the opportunity to join them.

Described as ‘one of the most exciting sonic experimenters to come out of Birmingham for some time’, Arc Vel’s explorative electronica is touched by elements of hip hop, world, post rock and dub music.
He released his debut ep ‘Lin’ with the majority of profits going towards the children’s charity Kidscape. Recently – after some time away working on live shows and supporting artists as diverse as Baths, Tenniscoats and Martin Creed – Arc Vel released his ‘Hippocampus’ ep via Manchester’s Leverage records, which was described as ’restlessly fusing disparate styles to form something kaleidoscopic and fresh’. His live show marries samplers, synths and guitars to inspiring video collages.

This audio visual collective mix classical instruments such as double bass and classical guitar with sampled typewriters, ripped bits of paper, electric guitars played with violin bows and live edited film. Quite simply, beautiful to listen to and incredible to watch.
Shakkei is Origamibiro’s second album in 4 years and their performance in August at Nottingham Contemporary sold out so don’t miss out this time around.

Si Tew, songwriter, producer & performer released his debut album ‘When the Clouds Ran Away’ on Atjazz in April 2011 to much critical acclaim. Si is a classically trained pianist and his music brings together a blend of soul, jazz and electronica.

Whilst he was deeply involved with the BBC Urban Music Bursary he met Atjazz label Boss Martin Iveson who offered him an internship at his Derby studio. Here he began writing and recording for film and television whilst continuing to develop his own music.
ROBIN SAVILLE – ISAN

Robin Saville will be performing a live set as exactly one half of Isan. From minimalism to melody and back again, Isan have been navigating the aural Autobahn since 1996.
Continually progressing their passion for sound, Isan are sometimes vibrant and scratchy, sometimes hymnal and opulent. Their sonic design sits somewhere between the Düsseldorf sounds of Kraftwerk and neu!, a young Eno and the smart-pop expertise of the Cocteau Twins.
They’ve remixed and been remixed by the likes of Depeche Mode, The Notwist, Seefeel and Piano Magic amongst others. With 7 albums to their name Isan are one of the most established acts in their field gracing respected festivals such as Sonar and the Big Chill and playing as far afield as China, Japan, Iceland, Russia and Hull, where they performed to 6 people (including the booker) at the legendary Adelphi.

Ben is a well know DJ in Nottingham and a fine selector of some of the best music around.
FLOTEL
9pm – The Space
Flotel – aka Leigh Toro – is a sound artist based in the UK producing music and installations as ‘Flotel’ and collaboratively as a member of both ‘Molten Gods’ and ‘Laboratorie’. Past sonic meanderings can be found on Expanding Records, Arable Records and Cactus Island with a recently released 60 min tape entitled ‘valence’ on Chemical Tapes.
8MM ORCHESTRA
9.30pm – The Space
8mm Orchestra are one of the most exciting new acts to spring out of Nottingham in recent years. This inspired band released their debut single One Small Step on Super Music Collider Records. Their music contains elements of prog-rock, electronica and modern symphony referencing bands like Can, Battles and Godspeed.

BETTY AND THE PHYSICS

After producing electronica for many years, Julian decided that the computer wasn’t enough and decided to build his own synthesizers. Julian will be showcasing new material written on the synthesizers built by his very own hands. A spectacle as well as a musical delight.
TRAY ELECTRIC

Tray Electric is an electronic music producer and musician from Nottingham, UK, armed with keyboards, guitars, vocoders and his own vocals as well as good old fashioned programming to make songs that are suited to both the stereo or the dancefloor.
Since stepping out to perform live Tray has performed for heavyweight Notts promotions and label Wigflex, alongside world champ scratch DJ Switch, with Royal Gala, for The Invisible Circus at Boomtown Fair and Headstock Festival.

Kirk Spencer is a Nottingham born producer and artist. His solo singles ‘Flying Through India’, ‘Hota Hai’ and ‘Enter the Void’ have and continue to receive national airplay on Radio1 and on BBC Asian Network. This has led to interviews on BBC Radio1 and on BBC Asian Network to talk about his music. His track ‘Phantom’ has also been play-listed on BBC Asian Network.

Soul Buggin’ is a DJ collective based in Nottingham consisting of local spinners Beane, Wrighty and Mark A. Concentrating on all things ‘soul’ their record collections span some 5 decades and their monthly Soul Buggin’ party at late night sauce den Moog in Nottingham has become THE party to check for all things disco. Now in their 7th year the Soul Buggin’ party has played host to some excellent guest DJs such as Benji B (BBC Radio One), Phil Asher, Ashley Beadle, Domu, Red Rack’em, Colin Curtis, Horse Meat Disco, Luke Unabomber, Bill Brewster, Faze Action, Simbad, Charles Webster, Deep Space Orchestra, Kev Beadle, Atjazz, Clyde, Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy, Al Kent, Flash Atkins, Scrimshire, DIY, Basement Boogaloo and so many more.
GEIOM

Geiom is one of the most exciting figures in the UK bass scene. Known for his varied DJ sets and live shows, his music draws on a wide range of influences and styles to make minimal, creeping beats with captivating melodies. Inspired by the likes of The Black Dog, Aphex Twin and Autechre – he enjoyed a string of releases on labels like Meir, Skam, Neo Ouija and City Centre Offices.
Geiom has followed the dubstep sound around the UK, eventually inviting dubstep’s major originators to Nottingham and even starting his own label, Berkane Sol, in 2006. The label has since released music by both established and emerging dubstep talents including Skream, Kode 9, and Shortstuff, Spamchop, Hizatron, Bowly and Erra. Geiom’s productions, remixes and collaborations have also found a home on such labels as Planet Mu, Deep Medi, Soul Motive and Wigflex. Mixing live instrumentation with computer aesthetics as well as incorporating electro, dub reggae and even Indian music, Geiom’s music is always thrilling and unpredictable.

Bones Will bring a relaxed, lazy and up lifting selection known as the ‘Spiritual Jazz’ mix. The mix gained alot of respect on the web for its subtle DJ skills and mix of spitual jazz classics such as Alice Contrane with modern equivalents such as the Japanese Build an Arc.

Alex is one half of the now internationally respected Myhouse-Yourhouse web radio station, that continues to evolve as a global community of like-minded fans, DJs, producers and promoters, supported by a huge network of events around the US and UK and a record label of the same name.
The music played at the Myhouse-Yourhouse events and the selections from Alex himself are a reflection of a childhood that reverberated with the contrasting sounds of Steely Dan, 808 State, Roy Ayers, Kraftwerk, Rick James, Hugh Masekela, Stevie Wonder, KLF, Santana, Sergio Mendes and Chic.
Since the launch of MHYH, Alex has received press attention from the BBC and Channel 4, and has brought a variety of DJs, including Charles Webster, Move D, Linkwood, Atjazz, Chris Duckenfield and Demarkus Lewis to the turntables of the highly respected and well attended MHYH parties and Siesta project in Nottingham.

Sunday at Raise the Roof will feature an Out to Lunch Special, the last remaining regular street jazz dancing session in the UK. Expect high tempo jazz, fusion, brazilian and afro cuban sounds accompanied by some of the best street Jazz dancers in the UK.

Mystery Guest is a unique collaboration of some of the most forward thinking musical minds on the London Improvised music scene.
Mystery Guest are Julian Siegel (Saxophone and Bass Clarinet), Chris Batchelor (Trumpet), Oren Marshall (Tuba and Electronics) and Gene Calderazzo (Drums).
The band members have performed with some of the most influential musicians in modern music history such as Laurie Anderson, Pharoah Sanders, Bobby McFerrin, Radiohead, the London Philharmonic, Bill Frisell, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Moondog.
Julian Siegel received the BBC Jazz Award 2007 for best instrumentalist and the London Jazz Award in the 2011 London Awards for Art and Performance. Chris Batchelor was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Composers award in 2009 and his band Big Air’s first album received the BBC Jazz Award for best new work in 2001

COREY MWAMBA

Corey Mwamba creates music using vibraphone, dulcimer, electronics and small instruments. His music contains elements of jazz, folk from different countries, and electronica.
Corey is primarily known as a highly creative improviser with a wide stylistic range: there have been appearances with Orphy Robinson, Pat Thomas, and Lol Coxhill; Andy Hamilton, Tony Kofi, the Master Drummers of Africa; Mat Maneri, Evan Parker, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, Robert Mitchell’s Panacea; as well as his own solo performances and with his collective the Symbiosis Ensemble.
RICK DONOHUE

Moving to Nottingham in the early 90’s Rick D has become a stalwart of the Nottingham DJ community. Rick plays many guest slots across the city with two residencies at Saltwater and The Malt Cross. Rick’s knowledge of contemporary music is exceptional, borne out of his time serving the DJ’s of the city at Selectadisc and Funky Monkey.
His discerning ear and DJ skills has earned him gigs alongside the likes of Gilles Peterson, Bugz In The Attic, Jazzanova, DJ Sneak, Mark Rae, Paul Wain, Dave Smith, DJ Format, DiY, Aim and Shaanti Soundsystem.

Jazz Trumpeter and 2011 Mobo Award nominee for best jazz Act Matthew Halsall is topping the bill for Raise the Roof on Sunday.
Manchester based DJ, bandleader and trumpeter Matthew Halsall is one of the UK’s brightest talents. A gifted trumpeter with a beautiful, expressive tone, his music draws on his love of the transcendental, spiritual and modal jazz of Alice and John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, as well as the glories of 60s British jazz. His previous albums ‘Sending My Love’ and ‘Colour Yes’ released on his own Gondwana label have won him a legion of fans across the world and acclaim from the likes of Gilles Peterson and Radio 3′s Late Junction, MOJO, BBC Music Magazine and even BBC 6 Music.
